About Greens On Campus
Beginnings...
The Greens have developed in different states in different ways and at different times. By and large, active members have come from the social justice, peace and environmental movements. In Tasmania, political activity began in 1972 when the United Tasmania Group stood candidates in the state election. Their first candidate to be elected to state parliament was Dr Bob Brown in 1983. He is currently a federal senator.
Greens NSW
In New South Wales, The Greens formed as a political party in 1984, drawing inspiration from the German Greens, as well as from events in Tasmania. The Greens NSW are organised as a confederation of about 30 (the number is steadily increasing) local and regional groups and have contested elections at all levels of government.
There are now over 25 Green representatives in NSW local government. Ian Cohen was elected in to NSW Legislative Council in March 1995 and Lee Rhiannon was elected in 1999. Kerry Nettle was elected to the federal senate in 2002. In 2003, Michael Organ was elected to the federal seat of Cunningham. Since their formation, The Greens NSW have developed an organisational practice and a comprehensive policy portfolio.
Australian Greens
In 2003 Greens WA made history by affiliating with the Australian Greens. This now means that every state and territory is represented in the Australian Greens.
Greens on Campus
As the party of progressive politics we are often the sole voice of opposition on social, environment and justice issues. In this context it is no longer acceptable for the Greens not to have an active presence on University and TAFE campuses. In that spirit the Greens on Campus was formed in 2004.
The purpose of Greens on Campus is to promote social, economic and political change. We are committed to four principles:
- Ecological sustainability;
- Social equality and economic justice;
- Grassroots democracy; and
- Peace, disarmament and non-violence.
We give students a voice on campus. Greens on Campus is a framework for students who want to stand for what they believe. Stand up and be counted!
